Compared to the Atlantic Menhaden and American Shad, the Blueback Herring exhibits a less prominently deep body and lacks additional rows of spots behind its single prominent post-gill marking. The Hickory Shad which may sometimes also lack distinct additional body spots can be distinguished from the Blueback Herring from a lack of a notched upper jaw.

Juveniles Distinguishing Characteristics:

Body slimmer and smaller in size, spot on shoulder more prominent

Range:

Nova Scotia to Florida

Habitat:

The blueback herring is an anadromous species. Spawning occurs in freshwater streams/rivers and lakes with rocky bottoms. Adults are found in shallow coastal waters, and they migrate to deeper water during colder months.
