Description:

Flat and compressed elliptical body. Skin is mottled with various shades of olive green, gray, brown, white, and tan and dark spots. Both eyes on same side of body. Significant arch in anterior lateral line over the pectoral fin. Pointed truncate tail. Large mouth with upper jaw extending past eye when closed.

Adults Distinguishing Characteristics:

The Southern Flounder can be distinguished from Bay Whiff and Fringed Flounder by a highly arched lateral line. Bay Whiff and Fringed Flounder have only slightly arched lateral line. The Southern Flounder can be additionally distinguished from the Ocellated Flounder and Summer Flounder by the Southern Flounder's lack of distinct ocellated spots.

Juveniles Distinguishing Characteristics:

Juvenile Southern Flounder exhibit the high lateral line arch of adults which can distinguish them from Fringed Flounder and Bay Whiff.

Virginia to Caribbean Sea

Habitat:

Found in coastal waters with sandy or muddy bottoms. May be found in brackish waters in estuaries and sometimes migrate into freshwaters.
