Description:

Flat and compressed elliptical body that tapers to a pointed truncate tail. Skin is mottled, and may have spots of various shades of olive green, gray, brown, white, and tan. Both eyes on same side of body. Low arch in lateral line. Angular/sharp lower jaw that extends in line with its eyes.

Adults Distinguishing Characteristics:

The Bay Whiff lacks a high-arched lateral line over its pectoral fin. When compared to the Fringed Flounder, the Bay Whiff has a larger and more angular mouth.

Juveniles Distinguishing Characteristics:

The low-arch of the lateral line over the pectoral fin is evident in juvenile Bay Whiff. The juvenile Bay Whiff's mouth is proportionally larger than that of the Fringed Flounder.

Range:

New Jersey to Brazil

Habitat:

Found in shallow coastal salt and brackish waters with sandy or muddy bottoms.
