Description:

Flat and compressed elliptical body that tapers to a pointed tail. Skin is mottled in various shades of olive green, gray, brown, white, and tan. Both eyes on same side of body. Small gradual arch in anterior lateral line. Very small mouth compared to other flounder-type fish in the area.

Adults Distinguishing Characteristics:

Fringed Flounder are distinguished from Ocellated, Southern and Summer Flounder by a lowly arched lateral line. Fringed Flounders have a smaller mouth compared to the Bay Whiff, whose jaw extends to its eyes, for a wide gape.

Juveniles Distinguishing Characteristics:

The distinctively small mouth, low lateral line arch, and deep body of the Fringed Flounder is evident within its juvenile state.

Chesapeake Bay to Brazil

Habitat:

Found in shallow coastal salt and brackish waters with sandy or muddy bottoms
