Description:

Body elongate and compressed, tapers to a truncate tail. Pointed snout with small upward-facing mouth that does not extend under eye. Two distinct dorsal fins with 4 spines in first dorsal. Back may appear a silvery gray-blue/green, parts of body may appear translucent. Belly silvery/white. Prominent silver stripe along length of body

Adults Distinguishing Characteristics:

The jaw of the Atlantic Silverside does not extend past its eye unlike both the Bay Anchovy and Striped Anchovy, which results in a proportionally smaller mouth for the Atlantic Silverside than both other regional anchovy species.
