Description:

Small bodied fish, with ompressed and streamlined body that tapers towards a forked tail with a single spineless dorsal fin. Coloration of upper body varies from gray to silver, most parts of body appears translucent, white belly. Thick silvery lateral strip that runs along entire length of body, silver strip as wide as eyes. Large overbite of terminal , and slightly pointed snout

Adults Distinguishing Characteristics:

The Striped Anchovy differs from the Bay Anchovy with its thicker silver horizontal stripe and more pointed snout. The Striped Anchovy's stripe does not fade upon death. Both anchovy species can be differentiated by their large mouths when compared to the smaller, potrusible mouth of the Atlantic Silverside, and the fact that Atlantic Silversides have two separated dorsal fins.
