Description:

Brick red to bright red dorsally to pinkish- white belly. Irises of the eyes are red. Moderately deep body that is laterally compressed. Anal fin is pointed. May be a narrow black margin on the caudal (tail) fin. Juveniles may have a dark spot dorsally on back half of body.

Red irises and pointed anal fin will distinguish Red Snapper from other snappers.

Juveniles Distinguishing Characteristics:

Pointed anal fin and lack of yellow horizontal stripes distinguish red snapper from other juvenile snappers.

Range:

Massachusetts to Gulf of Mexico

Habitat:

Adults will be around reefs and rocky bottoms from 33 - 625 ft. Juveniles will be in shallower waters over sandy or muddy bottoms.
