Description:

Grey Snapper (also known as Mangrove Snapper) have a terminal mouth, a single dorsal fin, and a truncate tail with a slightly concave margin. Grayish to olive colored fish with a reddish cast at its sides. Juveniles may have a blue-tint beneath their eyes and a dark bar through their eyes. Very pale bars fade with age.

Adults Distinguishing Characteristics:

The Gray Snapper can be distinguished from the Lane Snapper by its straight caudal fin margin, the absence of a dark body spot beneath the soft portion of the dorsal fin, and lack of yellow stripes running the length of the body.

Juveniles Distinguishing Characteristics:

Blue tint beneath their eyes with a horizontal eye stripe.

Range:

Massachusetts to Brazil

Habitat:

Found around structure in estuaries, rocky areas, tidal creeks, and river mouths. May also be found around mangrove and corals in other areas of its range.
