Description:

Introduced species. Small, narrow bodied fish with single dorsal fin and rounded tail. Color is light olive to tan above and a pale belly. Small flecking dots on its dorsal fin and caudal (tail) fin. Females will have black pigmentation on their silver hind gut. Mouth is small and superior (turned upward)

3.8 cm (1.5 in)

Adults Distinguishing Characteristics:

Gambusia have crosshatched scales and a dark stripe along the edge of the dorsal fin which distinguishes them from Killifish or Mummichogs.

Juveniles Distinguishing Characteristics:

Range:

New Jersey to Alabama. Originally introduced as moqsquito control.

Habitat:

Low current or standing brackish or freshwater water. May be around vegetation.
