Description:

Low interdorsal ridge. Large shark with a blunt, broad, short snout. Serrated teeth with deep notch on the outer margins. Adults have tiger-like vertical bars that fade with age and a spotted and mottled pattern on the sides behind the head. Insertion of first dorsal fin is behind to in line back of pectoral fin. Insertion of second dorsal fin in line with insertion of origin of anal fin. Spiracles present, small.

Teeth, short snout, and markings distinguish this species from all other Carcharhinids

Juveniles Distinguishing Characteristics:

Same as adults, but patterns will be more vibrant. Juveniles have blushing or green-gray to black bodies with dark blotches.

Range:

Massachusetts to Uruguay. Worldwide.

Habitat:

Tropical and temperate seas. Coastal to offshore, occasionally in river mouths and shallow bays.
