Description:

Body may appear tan or reddish-brown. Sharp pointed rostrum with 8-9 upper teeth and 2 lower teeth. First pair of walking legs end in pincers. Small grooves run along both sides of rostrum and on the last carapace segment before tail. First carapace segment overlaps second. Edges of legs and tail may be brown/red.

Adults Distinguishing Characteristics:

Brown Shrimp feature dorsal grooves on their carapace and last abdomen segment. In contrast to the Brown Shrimp the White Shrimp lacks dorsal grooves on any segment of its body and features much longer antenna. The Brown Shrimp has 2 lower teeth on the rostrum while the Seabob/Brown Mule Shrimp lacks teeth on the underside of its rostrum and its last two pairs of walking legs are noticeably more elongated. Like the Brown Shrimp, Pink Shrimp have dorsal grooves present on head and last carapace segment but are more narrow in width and have a dark spot at third or fourth abdominal segment.

Nova Scotia to eastern Central America

Habitat:

Found in estuarine and coastal, detritus-dense waters with soft muddy bottoms. Juveniles tend to stick to the marsh’s edge and can be found among aquatic vegetation before heading towards deeper waters as growth continues.
