Description:

Adults have a silver elongate body and truncate tail. Juvenile tails are highly lanceolate. Terminal mouth with a slight underbite and 2 fang-like teeth in upper jaw. First dorsal fin spiny and triangular in shape and second dorsal fin more rectangular and elongate. Lateral line extends onto tail fin. Back may appear silver-blue/green, fades to silver/white near belly. Juveniles have same underbite, fang-like teeth, and dark uneven horizontal banding.

Adults Distinguishing Characteristics:

The Silver Seatrout lacks the spotted body pattern of adult Spotted Seatrout. The Silver Seatrout can be differentiated from Weakfish by the the more uniformly spreadout pigment on the Silver Seatrout tongue, whereas the pigment is confined to the border of the tongue in the Weakfish.

Juveniles Distinguishing Characteristics:

Juvenile Silver Seatrout and Weakfish can be differentiated by the same adult tongue pigmentation pattern.

Maryland to Gulf of Mexico

Found in coastal waters with sandy or soft bottoms along beaches and estuaries
