Description:

Highly laterally comppressed body; lower profile more more curved than upper profile. Greenish-blue back that fades to silvery-gold near the belly. Dark black spot on caudal peduncle. Pointed snout with upward-facing mouth. Fins may show yellow tinge. Dotched dorsal fins; second dorsal more elongate than the first. May have two spines on pelvic fin.

Adults Distinguishing Characteristics:

Compared to the Atlantic Butterfish, the Atlantic Bumper exhibits a deeper body. Atlantic Bumper also have a darkened spot on their caudal peduncle (just before tail) as well as a notched dorsal fin. Atlantic Butterfish have one un-notched dorsal fin.
