Description:

Brown/tan body is flat and compressed. Deep and wide body with thin and dark vertical stripes, may exhibit mottling and spots. Both eyes on same side of body and has a rounded tail.

15.3 cm (6 in)

Adults Distinguishing Characteristics:

Hogchoker have a relatively circular body with a distinct tail that does not attach to the dorsal and anal fin, the body does not come to a point at the tail end. In contrast the Blackcheek Tonguefish has a more elongated body that comes to a point with a continuous tail fin.

Massachusetts to Panama

Habitat:

Adults are found in coastal salt and brackish waters with sandy or muddy bottoms. Juveniles may migrate upstream into tidal freshwater settings.
