Description:
Deep, compressed oval-shaped body and forked tail. Dark greenish-gray on back with silvery sides; yellowish coloration on belly. Dorsal fin begins in front of anal fin. Somewhat rounded head profile with blount snout and small mouth. Body of juveniles appear entirely silver.Fins may exhibit a yellow tint.

Adults Distinguishing Characteristics:
The Florida Pompano can be distinguished from the Jack Crevalle by the absence of a dark spot situated at the edge of the operculum as well as having a first dorsal fin composed of very short and separate spines.
Juveniles Distinguishing Characteristics:
In juveniles, the fins often show a yellow tint, and the area from the belly to the mouth may also appear yellow.
Range:
Massachusetts to Florida, Gulfof Mexico to Brazil
Habitat:
Coastal waters with soft muddy and sandy bottoms. Common around the beach surf zone; may travel into bays and estuaries.
