Description:

Long slender body with small rounded tail. Narrow tubular snout that is of moderate length compared to head. Length of snout goes into total head length Body may appear a mix of brown/tan, olive green, or gray with dark bars and some mottling, belly typically pale in color such as yellow or white.

Adults Distinguishing Characteristics:

The Northern Pipefish differs from the Chain Pipefish by its lack of a pronounced chainlike diamond pattern along the lower body.

Gulf of St. Lawrence to N. Florida

Habitat:

Shallow brackish and marine waters; found nearshore around seaweed and sea grasses in bays, marshes, creeks and river mouths.
