Description:

Deep and compressed body that tapers to a rounded tail. Two dorsal fins, first dorsal resembling a tough stiff spine the fish may lock in place, second dorsal elongate and translucent. Mottled coloring that varies between tan/brown to olive green with light and dark spots. Forward-facing mouth with a pointed snout. Lack pelvic fins. Skin feels rough to touch.

Adults Distinguishing Characteristics:

Planed Filefish have a thick, blotched appearance with a prominent retractable spine above the eye and two spines associated with the long dorsal fin. Filefish are similar to triggerfish, but have only two spines in the "trigger".

Habitat:

Found in coastal waters with sandy or muddy bottoms. Prefers waters with reefs or floating seagrasses/debris.
