The Guaguanche has an elongate cylindrical body that tapers to a forked tail. The body may appear dark-gray or silver-blue/green, which fades to silver/white near the belly. The fish's lateral midsection is marked with a singular yellow/golden stripe.It has a pointed snout and a terminal mouth with a noticeable underbite. Juveniles have three broad dark bars that encircle the body.
