Description:

Dark gray or brownish elongate body with a pale belly. Long, slim with depressed head with lower jaw projecting past upper jaw. May have horizontal pale bands on body with dark lateral stripe extending through eye to tail. Dorsal and caudal fin darkly pigmented. 7 - 9 spines in front of first dorsal fin.

Juvenilles had alternating balck and white horizontal stripes and can be confused with Remora species. Can be distinguished by lack of sucker disk present on the head that distinguishes remoras.

Range:

Massachusetts to Brazil, Worldwide

Habitat:

Found in nearshore and inshore waters with inlets and bays. Frequently found around structure. May also be found pelagic around reefs.
