Description:

Long cylindrical body with a spiny head and wide mouth - the head is large in proportion to rest of body. Truncate tail with wide, fan-like pectoral fins that have dark vertical bands and no spots. Fin colors may include olive green, yellow, orange, brown/tan, etc. Deeply notched dorsal fins with sharp spines and a singular dark patch on the first dorsal. Oblique dark bars/bands at base of second dorsal, bands extend from back to belly. Appears to have "legs" which act as feelers, but they are the first three rays of modified pectoral fins. Body brown/tan or olive-green in color and may exhibit dark banding and mottling and white under belly.

Adults Distinguishing Characteristics:

The Bighead Searobin has a larger head in proportion to body size than other searobin species. Look for the following noticeable markings on similar species to differentiate. The Striped Searobin has a dark narrow stripe following the lateral line and a second broader dark stripe on lower half of body above the belly running from the gill plates to tail. The Leopard Searobin has two dark spots/patches on its first dorsal and leopard spot pattern on second dorsal and along the entire body. The Northern Searobin has a singular dark spot with thin white stripes on first dorsal and faint thin white stripes along entire length of second dorsal. The upper body of the Northern Searobin may appear mottled with about 5-6 white spots along the back.

Juveniles Distinguishing Characteristics:

Juvenile Bighead Searobins can be distinguished from other regional searobins by their proportionally larger heads which are prominent even when young.

New York to Gulf of Mexico

Habitat:

Found in coastal sandy and muddy bottom waters. Juveniles inhabit estuarine waters.
