Description:

Dark, narrow bodied fish in shades of tan to brown, with dense speckles and blotches. Dark horizontal eye stripe with two stripes radiating from eye to gills. Fins are banded. Head is broad and flat, with superior mouth. Concealed spine just before the gill cover (preopercle).

North Carolina to Florida, Gulf of Mexico to Brazil

Habitat:

Shallow, coastal waters from fresh to marine. Adults predominantly in freshwater and juveniles in brackish water.
