Description:

Round body covered with yellow to tanish spines; may appear yellow/white with dark stripes/wavy-lines on all sides of body and head.Belly may be white or yellow. 5-7 dark spots on body. Beak-like mouth and bulbous eyes. Juveniles do not have developed spines, and may appear blue with yellow spots where the spines will eventually grow.

Adults Distinguishing Characteristics:

Striped Burrfish have distinct short thorn-like spines across their bodies, the spines stand erect even when deflated. Teeth are fused to form a beak-like mouth as with other related species.

Nova Scotia to Brazil

Habitat:

Coastal waters along soft bottoms such as seagrass beds and estuaries. Migrate to reef-associated waters during the winter.
