Description:

This elongate fish has a superior shaped mouth that is nearly vertical. Its tail has a rounded margin with black and white horizontal bands. It has prominent sharp teeth in its mouth, and small white spots covering its dorsal side on a grayish to olive-brown background. Its belly is white. Small eyes located on top of head. Non-visible organ located behind eyes can deliver electrical shock.

Juvenile Southern Stargazers spots will be dark speckles rather than white.

Range:

North Carolina to Brazil

Habitat:

Over soft bottoms, nearshore. Benthic species, often buries into substrate to ambush prey.
